What is a Canadian Oral Health Strategy?
A Canadian Oral Health Strategy (COHS) is a measure of the starting point (baseline data), a clear set of measurable goals for a specified time period, monitoring of progress towards the goals, and suggested ways of achieving the goals. Although in Canada health is a provincial jurisdiction, it would be helpful for all provinces and territories to know where they stand with respect to oral health in comparison to other areas, and to have available suggested strategies that they can implement toward improving the oral health of all people.
Purpose of the Canadian Oral Health Strategy
The purpose of a Canadian Oral Health Strategy is to:
- develop a baseline of the current status of oral health;
- establish a set of goals or targets to work toward, for the year 2010;
- to develop strategies that could assist Canadians to improve and maintain oral health and accomplish the goals; and
- to develop a system of measurement and monitoring of progress towards these goals.
Individual provinces, regions, communities or dental organizations could compare themselves with the national or regional averages, and could work toward improving deficient areas. The Canadian Oral Health Strategy provides a blueprint for improvement.
